Acne

Do you or a loved one struggle with acne? You are not alone. Acne is the most common skin problem in the United States- about 40 to 50 million Americans have acne at any one time. Acne can occur at any age.

Acne can appear on the back, chest, neck, shoulders, upper arms and buttocks. There are different types of acne, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. Each type requires different treatment.

It is important to get your acne treated. Acne can leave permanent scars and dark spots as the acne clears. The sooner you start treatment, the fewer permanent scars you will have.

There are many effective treatments for acne. This does not mean that every acne treatment works for everyone who has acne. But it does mean that virtually every case of acne can be controlled. Effective treatments include prescription medications applied topically or taken orally, procedures including chemical peels, lasers and other light therapies, and extractions. A combination of these may be needed, and treatment does not work overnight. It takes four to eight weeks to see improvement. Once the acne clears, the treatment must be continued to prevent breakouts until your dermatologist tells you it is okay to stop the treatment.
